WUUC
has been involved in a variety of social justice and community outreach
activities over the years. The Advocates for Social Justice Committee (ASJ
Committee) works to support human rights, social justice, and environmental
responsibility in our local, national, and global communities.
To find out what's happening this month, check out the Social Justice Corner in the newsletter.
Welcoming Congregation
WUUC has been a Welcoming Congregation since a unanimous congregational vote was taken in 1998 to be a part of this national program, which is dedicated to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for GLBT people. There are many opportunities for members to support this effort, such as attending Equality Day in Olympia and marching in the Pride Parade in Seattle.
Tent City 4
WUUC has hosted Tent City 4, a temporary encampment for up to 100 people, on three separate occasions, each time lasting approximately 90 days. Churches from around the area provide meals to the residents of Tent City and the hosting church also prepares several meals as well as organizing a meal sign-up calendar for the other churches.
Green Sanctuary
This program is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association and provides the framework for congregations to work on specific projects and activities that lead to recognition as a Green Sanctuary. Voluntary participation in this program provides an opportunity for congregations to live out their commitment to the Earth. The ASJ Committee has led the drive to complete a green sanctuary action plan and is now in the process of becoming certified as an official “green sanctuary.”
Charitable Giving
The ASJ Committee sponsors one plate collection every month to be donated to a local charitable organization. Past organizations include Hopelink, Eastside Domestic Violence Program, Northwest Harvest, Food Lifeline, Climate Solutions, Equal Rights Washington, Lifelong Aids Alliance, Habitat for Humanity, and many others.
