GEMS OF GOODNESS FOR AUGUST The Gems Class for children who will be in the second through sixth grades
in the fall continues to add to their moral compass as they hear and tell
stories, and take part in related activities such as games and projects.
On August 3, the session is “Do No Harm,” a reminder that
we are responsible for the consequences of our choices. Then, on August
10, the theme is “Making a Difference,” and on DR. SEUSS LESSONS FOR AUGUST The Dr. Seuss Class is for children who will be in kindergarten and first
grade next year. Each week they hear a Dr. Seuss story and participate
in games and crafts. They also receive gems for their treasure chests
for sharing stories. On August 3, the Seuss lesson will be “The
Lorax,” a story about the effects of greed on the environment. The
next week, August 10, the story will be “The Glunk that Got Thunk,”
about our imaginings. On August 17, LABOR DAY WEEKEND CLASS On August 31, the two classes will combine for activities that celebrate the filling of their treasure chests with the presentation of a special treasure. The story of the day will be about justice. All of the Gems and the Dr. Seuss lessons this summer helped to strengthen the children’s understanding of how to do their part to build a just society. REGISTRATION FOR 2008-2009 Registering children and youths for participation in the programs for their age groups at WUUC is a yearly, required ritual. We pack a lot on one page, from updates of contact and medical information to choices for parent support of WUUC’s cooperative programs. This year, as an added safety measure, a line on the form asks if your child may appear, unnamed, in pictures on church bulletin boards or on the website. Registration forms are available on the RE table in the foyer at the church or you can download registration form. TEACHERS AND TEACHER ORIENTATION Are you thinking of teaching this fall? Teachers are still needed at
every level from Dragonflies (four-year-olds & kindergarten) and Otters
(first and second grades) through the Falcons (3rd and 4th grades) and
the new Questing Year class (5th and 6th grades). Please talk to me if
you are interested, and the sooner the better. As soon as each teaching
team fills we can compare calendars and find a date sometime during the
end of August or the first week in September for orientation and training.
Good team attendance at the two-hour orientation can add greatly to what
both the children and teachers get out of the year. There are procedures
and safety policies to discuss, classroom management practices to share,
and a connection to be made to the spiritual aspect of the curriculum.
The final important task of each team’s orientation is to schedule
who will teach when through at least early January.
